Geographic Information System

Over the past two and a half years much of the effort of the Land Use Planning Board has been focussed on data collection. This has included contacting over 100 Government departments, community organisations, and corporations, as well as, contracting professionals to create data layers when information gaps were identified. The format of this information was varied, but has been converted for use in the geographic information systems (GIS) software, Arcview.

Pending the development of a formal policy, the interim approach for releasing GIS information from the Sahtu Land Use Planning Board is:

  • Most information is available as paper maps or image files.
  • Most data sets are not available as GIS compatible data files.
  • A data agreement must be signed, accompany data requests and be adhered to.
  • Some data has been obtained from 3rd parties and it may be necessary to approach the original supplier for the information.
  • Some data sets are confidential and will require permission from communities or others to access this information.
  • Occasionally data will only be released in a buffered format to preserve the confidential nature of the information.
